Quora: Can cops “lie” during an interrogation?
I just asked my first question on Quora. Something that my girlfriend and I were wondering as we’re both huge fans of crime shows.
Do you know the answer?
“In a lot of fictional depictions of police interrogating suspects, the cops will often stretch the truth to get people to talk. For example: Two suspects are taken in and the cops will interrogate them separately, telling a suspect that the other suspect has already admitted something when they didn’t. Does this happen and how legal is it?”

Your example is basically a Prisoners Dilemma and yes they can do that. They can’t outright lie to someone but they can let them draw their own conclusions, basically. Its a grey area.
