There is a great quote I read in Harper’s recently that went something like, “When you’re young, you know the world, but nothing about yourself, and as you get older, you know yourself very well but you know nothing about the world.” That seems accurate to me. Young people understand the world. They should be listened to on matters of politics and world organization. But they know nothing of their own lives. And I feel that way, too. I don’t feel I know much about the world anymore. I’m partly just running out of time. But I do feel I know myself a bit better. For what that’s worth.
